Warehouse teams need stock records that reflect what is physically happening across receiving, storage and production. Odoo Barcode supports this by linking scan-based workflows to inventory documents.
What Is Odoo Barcode?
Odoo Barcode is an Odoo application for processing inventory operations with barcode scans. It recognizes barcodes assigned to products, product packaging, warehouse locations, packages, lots and serial numbers, then links the scanned data to relevant inventory records.
What Warehouse Operations Can You Handle with Odoo Barcode?
Odoo Barcode supports day-to-day workflows across receiving, storage, fulfillment, inventory control and manufacturing. For a broader overview of stock movements, replenishment and traceability, see our guide to Odoo Inventory management.
Receive and put away products
During receiving, staff scan products against an incoming receipt and record the quantities that have arrived. They can also scan a warehouse location to record where goods are placed, keeping the receipt and warehouse stock records connected.
Pick, deliver and transfer stock
For a delivery or internal transfer, staff scan products as they are picked and moved. When location barcodes are part of the workflow, scanning the source or destination location records where the movement starts or ends. In guided workflows, Odoo checks scans against operation details and can flag unexpected products or locations before the transfer is completed.
Perform inventory counts and adjustments
During a physical count, staff scan products in a warehouse location and record the quantities found. They can then review the counted quantities against the stock recorded in Odoo and apply an inventory adjustment to reflect verified differences.
Track lots, serial numbers and packages
Lot numbers identify a batch of products, while serial numbers identify individual items. Scanning these codes during relevant operations links products to their traceability records. Package barcodes can identify a group of goods handled together, helping staff process the package and its contents as part of a stock movement.
Scan materials and finished products in manufacturing
For basic Odoo Manufacturing workflows, operators can scan the manufacturing order, components and finished products to record material use and production output. Barcode handling for individual work orders depends on the configured manufacturing workflow.
How to Set Up Barcode Scanning in Odoo
Prepare product and location records before scanning. This lets Odoo match each scan to the correct inventory operation.
Enable the Barcode feature
In Odoo Inventory, go to Configuration → Settings, enable Barcode Scanner, and save. This activates the Barcode app and its scanning workflows.
Assign barcodes to products, variants, packaging and locations
Enter each product’s barcode on its product record. Give each variant its own barcode when variants need to be identified separately, and configure codes for product packaging and warehouse locations so scans can identify the item, quantity or location.
Configure barcode nomenclature and tracking requirements
Select a barcode nomenclature that defines how Odoo recognizes and interprets scanned barcode patterns, such as the Default or GS1 nomenclature. If you track products by lot or serial number, enable that feature, set the tracking method on the relevant products and configure operation types to require those scans where needed.
Connect and test a compatible scanner
Connect the scanner to the device running Odoo and check that it sends the complete barcode correctly. For a USB scanner, match its keyboard layout to the computer’s settings. Test scans with representative product and location codes before warehouse use.
Which Barcode Scanners Work with Odoo?
Odoo supports three common scanner types:
- USB scanners connect to a computer and suit fixed workstations.
- Bluetooth scanners pair with a phone or tablet, allowing staff to scan while moving through the warehouse.
- Mobile computer scanners have a built-in scanner and are designed for warehouse use.
Choose based on where scanning takes place, how mobile staff need to be and whether the device works with your Odoo setup. Test the scanner with your actual products and workflows before deploying it across the warehouse.
How to Print Barcode Labels in Odoo
Once barcode values are assigned, Odoo can print labels for products, warehouse locations, lots and serial numbers. Depending on the label type and printer setup, the output may be a PDF or a ZPL file for a compatible label printer.
Print product and variant labels
Print product labels with the barcode and other details included in the selected report. Assign a separate barcode to each variant that needs to be identified independently. Odoo also supports barcodes on product packaging records, but printing those codes may depend on the label report and Odoo version. Check the label output before printing at scale.
Odoo can print a barcode label for a value assigned to a product; this is different from issuing a globally unique GTIN. Businesses that need globally unique product identifiers should obtain them through GS1.
Print warehouse location labels
With Storage Locations enabled, open the warehouse locations in Inventory, select the locations to label and use Print to download their barcode labels. Place each label at its corresponding shelf, bin or storage area so staff can scan the location during stock movements.
Print lot and serial number labels
Go to Inventory → Products → Lots / Serial Numbers, select the required records, then choose Print and select PDF or ZPL based on the printer setup. These labels identify a batch or an individual tracked item during handling.
What Is Odoo Barcode Lookup?
Odoo Barcode Lookup connects to an external product database to find information matching a UPC, EAN or ISBN. It requires an API key. If a match is available, Odoo can use the retrieved details, such as the product name, description, image or category, to help populate a product record. Review imported data before using it.
How Odoo Barcode Improves Warehouse Accuracy and Traceability
When staff scan the correct product, location and tracking codes, each validated operation adds a more dependable record of stock movement. Teams can use these records to support replenishment and fulfillment decisions and to trace lots or serial numbers through relevant operations. The results depend on accurate barcode data and workflows configured for the business.
